Archive for blanket

WIP Wednesday

I’ve actually got something to show you today. I’ve started my biggest project ever, I think. A blanket that I’m knitting as a gift for an upcoming wedding (top secret :-)).

It’s knitted in squares, and in the last three days I’ve managed to knit 3. That was with not much time for knitting, so I actually think that I’ll be able to finish it by the end of August. I’m actually going to be making it bigger than the pattern calls for, but I haven’t quite decided on the finished size, I think I’ll just keep going with the squares until I run out of yarn. It’s quite handy each square uses up one 50g ball of yarn.

So, without further ado, here are the squares I’ve knitted so far.

And here’s the square I’m currently working on.

FO Collection

I wanted to show you a collection of FO’s that I finished  over the last 3 years. The first lot is a set of a blanket, bonnet and booties. I’ve not blogged about these separately yet, but will do so over the next few weeks. This set was made for a friend from school who wanted to give it to a friend of hers. She picked the colours as she didn’t know whether it would be a boy or girl, as a matter of fact I’m still not sure :-). I do really like the colour combo and I think it can work for either boy or girl.

The second set was made for a good friends baby boy, who is actually not a baby anymore, he turns 2 in September. It’s a cardigan, trousers, hat, socks and booties. I’ve blogged about some of these before, but can’t remember exactly when. I made them over two years ago. I remember using up some of the yarn in my stash, hence the different colours, but I do really like them.

And the last set is a jumpsuit and booties that I made for an ex-colleague. She was giving this to a friend. I made the same jumpsuit for Luke, and really liked the pattern.

FO: Flowery Quilt

Posted in Sewing with tags , on January 12, 2012 by annatestadoro

I just found these pictures of a flower baby quilt that I made probably over 5 years ago. In fact it was so long ago that I can’t even remember who I made it for. What I do remember is that I had these really cute squares of different flowery fabric, and each square had a different pattern on it.

I can’t remember many more details of this particular quilt, but I remember it being really easy to make, I just used squares and sewed them together. I had a back piece, put wadding in the middle and then added a pink border.

FO: Cotton Baby Socks

I knitted this pair of baby socks for my friend’s little girl, Marianne, in Singapore. And because it’s always warm in Singapore (hot and humid in fact) I decided to go with cotton yarn. I had some nice Drops Safran left over, which conveniently was in the colours that Marianne’s mum was decorating the nursery with: white and yellow.

I went with my own gut instict regarding the pattern (it’s pretty straightforward after all) and just cast on 44 stitches initially. I think the yellow accents give the socks a really nice, chic edge.

And here’s the collection of items I knitted for Marianne, I’ve previously blogged about them here and here.

FO: Luke’s Blanket

Here’s the woollen blanket I made for Luke. This is the first time that I just went with straightforward stockinette stitch for this blanket (you might remember seeing blankets of similar style that have different stitch combinations). This has meant that it’s actually turned out much longer, which I actually like.

It’s a straightforward blanket for which I used Drops Karisma. It did take a while to knit as I had 200 stitches on the needle, but I think it’s definitely worth it as the size is perfect.

The colours have worked out really well. Again this is something I knitted when I thought we were having a girl, but I wanted to make sure that it would be as unisex has possible, which is why I picked those colours.

And here’s Luke wrapped in it when he was just a few hours old:

Can you believe how tiny he once was? Now he’s such a big boy, but the blanket is still keeping him warm, especially Winter is quickly approaching.

FO: Blanket

Another FO from my collection from the last couple of years. If I remember correctly I finished this in 2009 (my, my that’s a while ago isn’t it?). I’m just a tad embarrassed that it’s taken me this long to put it up, but it also means that I have a nice collection of pieces to fall back on when I need to!

This is a blanket I made for a friend, in fact we’re actually staying with her and her husband in Sydney at the moment. She asked me to make two blankets for her, one for her and one for her brother. They’re not for any particular babies, but rather because she liked them so much when she saw me make them for someone else.

I actually remember the day my friend and I were picking the colours for this blanket. She was quites sure about her choices, but then changed her mind quite a few times, which I thought was rather funny. I do like the choices she’s come up with.

I knitted this with a combination of moss stitch and stockinette stitch and I think it worked out really well! And this was the time I also sewed in my labels, and I do actually think that’s something I need to go back to, but maybe I need to make the label shorter…what do you think?

Long Awaited Baby Blanket

Posted in Knitting with tags , , on January 25, 2011 by annatestadoro

This is another one of my baby blankets that I made for a friend probably over a year ago, shame on me that I’m only adding it on here now! My friend asked me to make two of these blankets, one for herself and one for her brother. It was quite funny because neither one had kids yet or was pregnant, but she loved them so much when she saw some that I was making for other friends that she asked me to make her two as well.

I remember when she was picking the colours, I think she took pretty much one entire evening to pick the right ones. I do think they work extremely well and would be fine for a boy or girl!  I also decided to change the stitches up a little bit, so used moss stitch on the border and then a combination of purl and knit for the actual body of the blanket.

If you look closely you can see that the white is changed a tad at the end, that’s because I actually ran out of the normal white that I was using. I don’t think it’s that obvious though, and I’m probably the only one that notices it.

These blankets always take quite a while, but they’re definitely a hit with people. I always hope that they may become a baby’s security blanket or something like that and that they become a real keepsake.

A Special Blanket

Here’s a cotton blanket I finished for a friend of mine in Singapore, hence the cotton. Her husband is my man’s good friend from University, they were a little group and called themselves ‘The Hornets’. Funnily enough we’re now the first ones to have a baby and now my friend in Singapore with her husband are also expecting a little one, a little girl.

I followed the colour choices that our friends are decorating the nursery with and I actually think it worked out really well. I also added something new to the blanket with the crochet border, which I think makes it extra special.

I also decided to use different stitches for each colour, with some purl, some knit and some moss stitch. The reason I used cotton is because it’s rather warm and humid in Singapore and I wanted to make sure that our friends are still able to use the blanket. Especially as blankets are such a keepsake item, you often hear about babies loving their blankets so much that they take them everywhere, I do hope that this might be that blanket for our friends little one!

Cotton Blanket for Baby Prasad

I made this blanket for our impending arrival, and decided to use cotton yarn so that it’s an ideal blanket for spring/summer.

The colour combination works really well and I like the fact that it’s really colourful, it’s good for either a boy or a girl! It’s an incredibly easy knit, just 200 stitches and then I used up a ball of yarn of each colour and that’s pretty much it.

Soft Quilt for Baby Prasad

Posted in Sewing with tags , , , on November 3, 2010 by annatestadoro

Even though I’ve been making lots of knitted baby blankets in recent years, I also used to make smallish baby quilts. Although, I often don’t do any actual quilting, apart from some minor sections. I prefer to patchwork the top and then chose a nicely coloured piece of fabric for the bottom, then in the middle I use some wadding to make it nice and soft.

And even though I know that we’re having a little girl, I still decided to use a good selection of yellows, a nice red and green, with a nice pinkish bottom piece of fabric. It’s worked out well, and is nice and soft.

This quilt brings my collection of blankets to three, a woollen one, a cotton one and this one. I think I should probably stop making blankets now, but they’re nice and easy to knit/make and I love the idea of being able to chose very different colours.
